About the Marukyu Koyamaen brand. Marukyu Koyamaen started to cultivate and manufacture tea in Ogura, Uji in 1704, led by their founder, Kyujiro Koyama. Over the last 300+ years, Marukyu Koyamaen have devoted themselves to producing the highest quality tea generation after generation. Marukyu Koyamaen is one of the oldest established tea manufacturers in Uji, and supply their high-quality tea to many prestigious temples, shrines, and tea ceremony houses. Marukyu Koyamaen have acquired a number of notable awards at the annual National Tea Competition in Japan. Since 1962, Marukyu Koyamaen has won the highly-coveted first place award 30 times.

MATCHA TEA SUITABLE FOR KOICHA OR USUCHA

TENJU [天授] or "Tea from Heaven" is the finest koicha available. This handmade matcha is prized at The All-Japan Competitive Tea Exhibit. As koicha, it releases its soft, sweet, and delicate flavors slowly, then gives way to a lingering sensation. As usucha, it is ethereal in its lightness, boasting the softest of flavors.

CHOAN [長安] is named for the Chinese city from which tea was first introduced to Japan. As koicha, it is characterized by a fresh grassy character, leading to an intense, lingering sweet, round, full-bodied flavor, leaving you content, delighted, and happy. As usucha, it is a rich, milky, sweet, and creamy matcha.

EIJU [永寿] or "Long Life" is a top grade koicha with middling character in flavor. As koicha, it first releases the aroma of roasted peanuts and almonds, then to a pure, lingering sweet creamy flavor with a mild vanilla finish. As usucha, it first exudes a spinach-like vegetal flavor, and is a soft and creamy matcha.

UNKAKU [雲鶴]

UNKAKU [雲鶴] or "Crane in the Clouds" is an entry grade koicha with sophisticated, full-bodied flavors, boasting grassy notes, without noticeable bitter or tart undertones. As koicha, it will delight discerning palates with its elegant, flavors, full of character, giving way to a lingering sweet after-taste.

KINRIN [金輪]

KINRIN [金輪] or "Gold Ring" is an entry grade koicha that introduces the myriad of delights of thick tea, albeit still accented by slightly tart notes that disappear in the other koichas. As usucha, on the other hand, Kinrin impresses with a soft, creamy, grassy flavors in a league of their own.

MATCHA TEA SUITABLE FOR USUCHA

WAKO [和光] or "Peaceful Light" is the top grade usucha with an intense, full-bodied and round flavor, minimal tartness, and long-lingering pleasant sweet finish. It is so good as usucha that it can even be tried as koicha.

YUGEN [又玄] or "Transcendent Grace and Subtlety" is a top grade usucha with nutty, grassy, and mildly tart flavors, which gives way to a lingering sweetness with just a hint of bitter after-taste. Distinctly present in this matcha are the sweeter flavors of higher quality matcha teas.

CHIGI NO SHIRO [千木の白]

CHIGI NO SHIRO [千木の白]

CHIGI NO SHIRO [千木の白] or "A Thousand Trees" is characterized by a vibrant, grassy, and very soft flavor with a touch of tartness. No bitter or sweet notes, but much velvety creaminess characterizes this even-keeled matcha. This tea exudes harmony, tranquility, and peace.

ISUZU [五十鈴]

ISUZU [五十鈴] or "Fifty Bells" is a bolder matcha, boasting a decisive character, and flavors steeped in sharp, tart amino acids. Prepare using 70°C temperature water to reduce the tartness and soften its flavors. Prepare with hotter or less hot water to be impressed with highly distinctive flavors.

AOARASHI [青嵐]

AOARASHI [青嵐] or "Green Storm" is a calm, and tranquil matcha, free of intense or roaring flavors, and with mildly tart and slightly bitter notes. Its finely balanced flavor make it a great way to step inside the world of matcha.
